What is your narrative?

Narratives are the stories we tell ourselves about our experiences, whether in the past, present, or future. These stories matter because they shape how our brain interprets the world and what outcomes it prepares for. When we consistently predict the worst, we teach the brain to expect threat, which can increase stress, tension, and even pain. The brain learns through repetition and rehearsal, so when we shift our inner narrative to reflect healing, resilience, and safety, we begin to show the mind a new path—one that supports recovery rather than fear.

Think back to a time you were convinced you would fail a test and then struggled to perform, or a time you truly believed you could catch a ball and succeeded. These examples reflect how belief influences behavior and outcomes. The same applies to pain. What are the stories you tell yourself about your symptoms or your body? Are there other, more supportive narratives you could explore, ones that open the door to possibility, strength, and healing?
