How to approach big emotions
You can apply many of the tools you have learned from this module towards BIG emotions. Here are some techniques to try. Pick a few that resonate with you!
Release the judgment around experiencing these emotions.
Acknowledge their presence without needing to change anything. Can you identify the emotion?
Allow it to be, remembering that emotions will pass.
Offer yourself a supportive hand.
Notice where the emotion is showing up in your body. How might it be expressing itself?
Somatic track the emotion.
Engage in movement or connect with others socially.
Investigate any ruminating thought patterns. You can use the RAIN method (Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture).
Work on changing your relationship with the emotion.
Big emotions can feel overwhelming, but they are a natural part of being human and will pass with time. Often, our thoughts and beliefs about the emotion have a greater impact than the feeling itself, activating our internal danger alarms. By releasing judgment and offering yourself the same compassion you would give a friend, you teach your brain that emotions are not a threat.
