Why We Focus on Values, Not Just Goals
In Pain Reprocessing Therapy, we place more emphasis on values than rigid goals. While goals can be helpful, they often come with timelines and expectations that can unintentionally put pressure on the nervous system. This pressure can increase stress and lead to feelings of frustration or disappointment when progress doesn't happen as quickly as hoped, leading to higher pain sensations!
Values, on the other hand, offer a more sustainable and compassionate guide for healing. They reflect what truly matters to you, such as spending time with family, returning to movement, practicing self-care, feeling more hopeful or optimistic, or enjoying time in nature. These experiences are meaningful indicators of progress and help us stay connected to purpose, even during ups and downs.
By focusing on values, we support the nervous system in a more balanced and flexible way, allowing healing to unfold and sending messages of “safety” to our brain.
